World Spine Day: Sciatica or Ordinary Back Pain? A Hyderabad Guide

Dr. Nishanth Ponaganti 7 min read

World Spine Day is 16 October. Ordinary back pain stays in the lower back and eases as you move. Sciatica is nerve pain that travels from the back or buttock down the leg, often with tingling, numbness, or weakness. Long drives, desk work, and lifting during festival shopping commonly flare both in Hyderabad.

Spine and nerve care looks at whether a nerve root is irritated, not only whether an X-ray mentions “spondylosis”. Many adults have scan changes without pain. The examination decides what the pain means.

What is sciatica?

Leg pain that follows a nerve path is assessed differently from a local muscle strain.

Sciatica means irritation of the sciatic nerve or its roots, often from a lumbar disc pressing on a nerve. The pain is sharp or burning, may worsen with cough or sitting, and can reach the calf or foot. It is a symptom, not a diagnosis by itself.

How is sciatica different from simple back pain?

  • Simple back pain is aching, local, and often follows a strain, long sitting, or a poor mattress. Strength in the leg stays normal.
  • Sciatica travels below the knee, with pins and needles or a dead feeling in part of the foot.
  • Weakness — a foot that slaps when you walk, or difficulty standing on the toes — means the nerve is not only painful. That needs a prompt neurology review.

What should you avoid if pain shoots down the leg?

Skip days of bed rest. Short rest is fine; walking within comfort helps. Avoid heavy lifting of festival decorations, deep forward bends, and aggressive twisting. Do not start gym loading or unsupervised traction because a relative improved with it. Painkillers can bridge a few days. They do not replace an examination if the leg is weak.

When is sciatica an emergency in Hyderabad?

Go to emergency care the same day if you cannot pass urine, lose bladder or bowel control, have numbness in the saddle area between the legs, or develop rapidly worsening leg weakness. Also seek urgent care for back pain with fever, unexplained weight loss, or pain after a fall. These are not problems to watch at home over the weekend.

Questions patients ask

Yes. Dr. Nishanth Ponaganti checks nerve function, reviews scans when they are needed, and plans medicine, activity, and physiotherapy. Surgery is considered for severe weakness or symptoms that affect bladder or bowel control.

No. Most new back pain without leg weakness, fever, or bladder changes improves over a few weeks. MRI is useful when pain persists, weakness appears, or nerve compression is suspected.

A short rest is reasonable. Staying in bed for days slows recovery. Walk within comfort and avoid heavy lifting until a clinician reviews you.

Patients visit ZOI Hospital, Attapur and Apollo Spectra, Kondapur from Rajendranagar, Mehdipatnam, Tolichowki, Kukatpally, and across Hyderabad and Telangana.
