5 Migraine Triggers to Watch During Hyderabad Monsoon

Dr. Nishanth Ponaganti 6 min read

Humidity, barometric pressure shifts, and sleep changes make monsoon a peak season for migraines in Hyderabad. Here are five triggers to watch — and practical steps to prevent them this September.

Every year as the monsoon arrives in Hyderabad, neurology clinics see a noticeable rise in migraine and headache consultations. At ZOI Hospital, Attapur and Kondapur, patients from Attapur and Kondapur, Rajendranagar, Mehdipatnam, and across the city often report worsening headaches between June and September.

As a neurologist with fellowship training in Headache & Facial Pains, I regularly help patients identify patterns rather than treating each attack in isolation.

1. Barometric Pressure & Weather Swings

Weather shifts during monsoon are a well-documented migraine trigger.

Rapid changes in atmospheric pressure before heavy rain can activate the trigeminovascular pathways involved in migraine. Many patients notice headaches 12–24 hours before a storm. Keeping a simple headache diary — noting date, weather, sleep, and meals — helps confirm this pattern.

2. High Humidity & Dehydration

Hyderabad's humid monsoon months reduce the body's natural cooling through sweat evaporation. People drink less water than they realise, and even mild dehydration can trigger migraine. Aim for 2–2.5 litres of fluids daily unless your doctor advises otherwise.

3. Irregular Sleep from Weather Discomfort

Thunder, cooler nights followed by warm mornings, and disrupted routines during heavy rain affect sleep quality. Poor or irregular sleep is one of the strongest migraine triggers. Maintain a consistent sleep schedule and limit late-night screen use.

4. Indoor Allergens & Sinus Pressure

Damp conditions increase mould and dust mite exposure indoors. Sinus congestion can mimic or trigger migraine-like headaches. If you notice facial pressure or morning headaches, mention this during your consultation.

5. Skipped Meals & Caffeine Changes

Rainy mornings often disrupt breakfast routines. Fasting and blood sugar dips are common triggers. Reducing chai or coffee suddenly can cause withdrawal headaches — taper gradually if you plan to cut back.

When to See a Neurologist

Consult a specialist if headaches are increasing in frequency, lasting more than 72 hours, accompanied by weakness or vision loss, or if painkillers are needed more than twice a week.
